There are times when the director and cinematographer should not be one and the same. There are times when it works best when they are.
If you are a cinematographer or a director of photography, you understand perspective from a visual standpoint. If you’re a director, you understand perspective from a storytelling standpoint.
This is why a director and a cinematographer are a team in the filmmaking process.
It’s important to realize that in order to bring the vision of your story to life, you need the person behind the camera to shape it visually.
Sure, you can be the director and cinematographer. However, I personally believe that your film is better when you are focused and fully engaged in your film production as a director and allow a good cinematographer to be fully engaged as such.
If it was to come down to two roles in film production that are prime, those two roles should be considered carefully. While you may make a dozen films before you finally connect with one DP, it’s important to make that DP your partner in all films if you can.
